<International Circulation>: We know that omega-3 fatty acids have been around for about 30 years now. Can you tell us about some of the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids on cardiovascular disease prevention and treatment?
<International Circulation>: In your talk you said that a new form of free omega-3 fatty acid produced a four-fold higher bioavailability than traditional ether-esters. Are there any safety issues concerning those high concentration omega-3 fatty acids?

Prof. Davidson: No, not at all. In our research we have looked at populations like the Greenland Eskimos who are eating much higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids and they do not have any heart disease. We think we need to give enough to have an effect, 4 grams of free omega-3 fatty acid, which is considered to be recognized as a safe level both in the United States and throughout the world. It is not a lot of omega-3 fatty acids but in other less bioavailable forms, to give a lot of it, a person would have to eat something like 10 or 20 capsules. In this form giving 2 or 3 capsules of the free fatty acids might be high enough of a dose because it is so better absorbed to provide a lot of the clinical benefits for patients to prevent heart disease or to treat cardiovascular disease.

Prof. Davidson: The more the better I’m not so sure. Certainly, we see that it is necessary to give enough. People usually cannot get enough by eating a lot of fish. It really is necessary to take the supplements when it comes to omega-3 fatty acid levels in the blood.
